Archer Aviation (NYSE: ACHR) announced on June 8th that its Midnight aircraft successfully completed the electric transition flight at speeds of over 100 miles per hour. To date, Archer has now achieved transition flights with two different full-scale eVTOL aircraft, Maker and Midnight.
The Midnight eVTOL aircraft, weighing approximately 6,500 pounds (about 3 tons), is believed to be one of the largest eVTOL aircraft to complete the electric-powered transition flight. This is crucial for achieving commercialization of passenger-carrying flights.
The company's first-generation full-scale eVTOL aircraft, Maker, successfully achieved transition flight in November 2022. With Midnight's first flight just seven months prior, Archer has now successfully transitioned to production eVTOL aircraft, continuing to advance the commercialization of eVTOL.
Midnight plans to simulate commercial flight routes to demonstrate the aircraft's operational readiness, perform high-speed flight operations, test additional flight maneuvers for commercial settings, and expand its flight envelope in terms of speed and endurance.
On June 5th, the company announced that its subsidiary Archer Air has received an Air Carrier Certificate from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), meaning that after obtaining type certification for Midnight, Archer will begin commercial operations with the aircraft. Once the system and procedures are refined, it will be put into operation by airlines such as United Airlines.
Midnight is currently in the final "implementation" phase of its type certification program and will begin piloted flight testing later this year.
Archer's goal is to transform urban travel by replacing 60-90 minute car commutes with estimated 10-20 minute electric air taxi flights that are safe, sustainable, low-noise, and cost-competitive with ground transportation. Archer's Midnight is a piloted, four-passenger aircraft designed for rapid back-to-back flights with minimal charge time between flights.
