Less than three weeks after the market launch of the STELATO S9, Huawei HIMA (Harmony Intelligent Mobility Alliance) unveiled another two new models at a new product launch event held in Chengdu on August 26, 2024: the "best SUV in the 250,000-yuan range" AITO M7 Pro, and the "first smart coupe SUV" LUXEED R7.

In the current AITO, LUXEED, and STELATO brands sold by HIMA, AITO accounts for more than 80% of the sales volume. Among them, the AITO M7 is the best-seller and has the most frequently updated versions from Huawei, having launched 18 versions since its first release in July 2022.

The biggest selling point of the newly updated M7 Pro is the realization of smart driving through low-cost hardware. The model is equipped with the entrance version of “HUAWEI ADS SE” smart driving system, which does not rely on LiDAR, and is equipped with 3 millimeter-wave radars, 10 high-definition cameras, and 12 ultrasonic radars. It can achieve intelligent driving assistance on highways and urban expressways and autonomous parking at a lower hardware cost, but it cannot achieve smart driving functions in urban areas.

Compared to the previous entry-level model M7 Plus, the new AITO M7 Pro has been upgraded and improved in terms of comfort, intelligence, and safety. Although it is slightly inferior to the high-end version "HUAWEI ADS 3.0” smart driving system in terms of urban NCA, forward active safety, and front and rear pedal mis-operation reminder/braking function parameters, this model maintains consistency with M7 Plus in terms of lateral active safety, NCA on highways and urban expressways, urban LCC+ (supporting traffic light recognition), and urban LCC, and adopts the same architecture as the high-end ADS 3.0 version.

Smart driving functions are becoming one of the key factors for users to consider when purchasing a car in China. Equipping entry-level models with smart driving functions is particularly evident in brand enhancement. In this regard, Yu Chengdong, Chairman of Huawei's Intelligent Car Solutions BU, said that the new AITO M7 Pro will become the best SUV in the 250,000-yuan class and help usher in a new era of smart driving for all.

The new AITO M7 Pro has launched four models this time, starting at a price of 249,800 yuan, with a price range of 249,800 to 289,800 yuan. However, Yu Chengdong also revealed at the launch that the cost of the new AITO M7 Pro is very high, and the company currently loses nearly 30,000 yuan for each car sold. According to industry insiders, the difficulty in cost control lies in how to reduce the cost of urban NOA, which relies more on computing power and LiDAR. It is reported that the cost of only 500TOPS computing power plus one LiDAR is as high as 20,000 to 25,000 yuan. "The AITO M7 Pro, through medium computing power matching a pure vision solution, has reduced the car price to below 250,000 yuan, which is also a new idea for rapid growth of NOA."

Some industry insiders believe that the AITO M7 Pro may bear the responsibility of competing head-to-head with the L6 by Li Auto. These two models have similar starting prices, both belong to range-extended SUVs, and both take comfort, safety, and intelligence as selling points, making it easy for consumers to make comparison.

All the HIMA brands currently on sale have been equipped with the HUAWEI ADS smart driving system, including the AITO in cooperation with Seres, the LUXEED in cooperation with Chery, and the STELATO in cooperation with BAIC. In addition, the high-end brand AVATR and the low-end brand Deepal of Chang'an Automobile, which cooperates with Huawei, are also equipped with the HUAWEI ADS system. Recently, the Leopard 8 model of BYD's tough off-road sub-brand Fangchengbao (Equation Leopard) will also be equipped with the HUAWEI ADS 3.0 high-end smart driving system.

The first coupe SUV, LUXEED R7, officially debuted at this launch event, and it is the first SUV product under HIMA other than the AITO brand. The LUXEED R7 is equipped with Huawei "Great Whale" 800V high-voltage battery platform throughout the series, with the longest cruising range reaching 802 kilometers. In addition, based on the Tuling platform, the LUXEED R7 is equipped with CDC continuous variable damping shock absorbers and air suspension as standard throughout the series. Moreover, the new car is also equipped with Huawei high-end ADS 3.0 end-to-end human-like smart driving system, achieving nationwide autonomous driving capabilities.

As the second model in the cooperation between Huawei and Chery Automobile, the release of LUXEED R7 is highly anticipated this time. The first battery electric coupe LUXEED S7, previously cooperated by Huawei and Chery, did not meet sales expectations: in July, the total delivery volume of HIMA families was 44,000 vehicles, and the sales volume of LUXEED S7 was 2,555 vehicles, accounting for only 5.8%.

The R7 is positioned against the Tesla Model X and is expected to be priced slightly higher than the Model Y, similar to the previous LUXEED S7, which was positioned against the Model S and priced close to the Model 3.

So far, the lineup of HIMA models has expanded to six, including the AITO M5, M7, M9 in cooperation with Seres, the LUXEED S7, R7 in cooperation with Chery, and the STELATO S9 in cooperation with BAIC. The MAEXTRO, in cooperation with Jianghuai Automobile, is expected to launch its first model in the first quarter of next year.

On August 20, AVATR signed a "Share Transfer Agreement" with Huawei in Chongqing, investing 11.5 billion yuan to purchase 10% of the shares of Shenzhen Yinwang Intelligent Technology Co., Ltd. (formerly known as Huawei Car BU) held by Huawei. On August 25th, Seres also announced to invest 11.5 billion yuan in Shenzhen Yinwang Intelligent Technology Co., Ltd., holding 10% of the shares. In the future, AVATR may continue to increase its shares in Yinwang to 20%. Huawei is exploring new cooperation models with and car companies, and the cooperation space is becoming increasingly broad.
