Crowley, an American company, has recently put into operation an all-electric harbor tugboat named eWolf.

This 82-foot (approximately 25 meters) long electric tugboat was built by Master Boat Builders in Coden, Alabama, and can provide a bollard pull of 70 tons, stronger than its predecessor. It is equipped with ABB's end-to-end electric propulsion system, including a 6.2 megawatt-hour energy storage system (ESS). The eWolf is supported by a new microgrid shore-side charging station, allowing the tugboat to operate at full load on electricity every day.

Given that power generation onshore is cheaper than onboard, the energy storage system can also minimize operating costs.

According to information released by the company, in addition to the energy storage system, ABB also provides its onboard DC grid distribution platform for optimizing energy use, the ABB Ability Marine Diagnostic system for continuous preventive and predictive monitoring of equipment, and the ABB Ability Marine Pilot product to enhance safety and reduce crew workload. Pilot Vision provides a 360-degree view from the pilot station, while Pilot Control offers maneuvering support. ABB also provided the ship with components including transformers, propulsion motors, azimuth thrusters, and low-voltage distribution panels, as well as support in design, engineering, project management, and commissioning.

The eWolf electric tugboat was developed in collaboration with Crowley, the Port of San Diego, the San Diego County Air Pollution Control District, the California Air Resources Board (CARB), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and the U.S. Maritime Administration. All parties are committed to improving air quality through the adoption of battery energy in ship and port technology. The company claims that the eWolf will significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions at the Port of San Diego, replacing a tugboat that consumes more than 30,000 gallons of diesel annually.
