Recently, the National Energy Administration released the operation of renewable energy installation for the first half of the year. As of the first half of 2024, China has completed and put into operation 44.44GW/99.06GWh of new energy storage, an increase of over 40% compared to the end of 2023.

According to the data previously announced by the National Energy Administration, by the end of 2023, the cumulative scale of new energy storage put into operation in China was 31.39GW/66.87GWh. Based on this estimation, in the first half of this year, the scale of new energy storage installations in China is approximately 13.05GW/32.19GWh.

In terms of regional distribution, the new energy storage installations in operation in the Northwest and North China regions account for more than 50% of the national total, with a relatively high proportion of new energy storage installations in these areas.

From a technological perspective, several compressed air energy storage, flow battery energy storage, and sodium-ion battery energy storage projects have been put into operation, with the exploration and application of grid energy storage, promoting the diversified development of technologies. As of the first half of 2024, the proportion of lithium-ion battery energy storage in operation is 97.0%, compressed air energy storage is 1.1%, lead-acid battery energy storage is 0.8%, flow battery energy storage is 0.4%, and other technological routes account for 0.7%.

In terms of application scenarios, the proportion of independent energy storage and shared energy storage installations is 45.3%, while the proportion of energy storage installations built in conjunction with new energy is 42.8%, and other application scenarios account for 11.9%.

Since 2024, the level of new energy storage scheduling and utilization has continued to improve, and the regulatory role of new energy storage has been continuously enhanced. According to the statistical data of power grid companies, in the operating area of the State Grid Corporation, the equivalent utilization hours of new energy storage in the first half of 2024 reached 390 hours, and the equivalent number of charge and discharge times was about 93 times, an increase of about 100% and 86% respectively compared to the first half of 2023. In regions with more mature market operations, such as Shandong and Gansu, the level of new energy storage utilization has been further improved. In the operating area of the Southern Power Grid Corporation, the equivalent utilization hours of new energy storage in the first half of 2024 reached 560 hours, approaching the level of the whole year of 2023.

In April of this year, the National Energy Administration issued the "Notice on Promoting the Grid Integration and Scheduling and Utilization of New Energy Storage" ([2024] No. 26), standardizing the grid integration access of new energy storage and promoting the efficient scheduling and utilization of new energy storage. With the issuance of the new document, the scheduling and utilization of new energy storage have been continuously enhanced, and the regulatory role has gradually emerged.
