Global hydrogen production exceeds 100 million tons in 2023, and China leads in hydrogen production from electrolysis.

Hydrogen energy, as a secondary energy source, plays a significant role in the energy transition and is an essential part of the future energy mix. Recently, the research institution EVTank released statistics stating that in 2023, the global hydrogen production exceeded 100 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 7.0%, with China's hydrogen production accounting for about 40%.

However, China still primarily relies on coal-based hydrogen production, with coal-to-hydrogen accounting for as much as 57.4% of China's hydrogen production in 2023, while electrolysis-based hydrogen production only makes up 2%.

According to the analysis, previously, due to restrictions on policies regarding hazardous chemicals, hydrogen production chemical projects in China had to be located within chemical industrial parks. This not only limited the flexible coupling development of "wind power and photovoltaic + electrolysis hydrogen production" but also significantly increased the cost of hydrogen production. However, since 2024, several provinces including Jilin, Inner Mongolia etc. have gradually relaxed policy restrictions, allowing the hydrogen production projects as well as the hydrogen production and refueling integration projects to be built outside of chemical industrial parks, and meanwhile, the safety production qualification requirements for hazardous chemicals have been abolished. This has greatly reduced the cost of green hydrogen production. It is expected that this will promote the rapid development of China's hydrogen energy industry, and the market share of green hydrogen is also expected to increase significantly.

As of the first half of 2024, the global cumulative number of hydrogen refueling stations reached 1,262, of which China has 456, accounting for 36.1% of the global total, making it the country with the most hydrogen refueling stations worldwide. Other refueling stations are mainly distributed in countries and regions such as Japan, South Korea, Europe, and North America.
