Recently, Tesla has made new progress in the expansion project of the Semi factory at its Gigafactory Nevada, with the first steel beam now in place. According to Zanegler, a Tesla Giga Nevada observer, who posted a video on social media platform X on Monday, the construction crew is not using traditional cranes to erect the steel beams but is instead employing multiple boom lifts with workers stationed on them.

The Tesla Semi expansion factory broke ground in January of this year and, upon completion, will add dedicated production facilities for both the Semi and the 4680 battery cell. Tesla announced this $3.6 billion expansion project in early 2023. Once operational, the factory is expected to produce 50,000 Semi vehicles annually, and the 4680 cells will meet the demand for producing 2 million light-duty electric vehicles per year. The project is anticipated to increase the workforce at the existing factory, which currently stands at 12,000 employees, by an additional 6,500 full-time workers.

In recent months, significant progress has been made in the initial construction of the Semi factory, with steel beams officially delivered to the site early last month, and foundation work began on August 8th. Dan Priestley, the head of the Semi program, shared updated renderings of the Semi factory's appearance upon completion at the Gigafactory Nevada on X at the end of July.

Tesla aims to start production of its electric truck, the Semi, at the facility in the second half of next year, with deliveries to external customers expected to begin in early 2026. The company has already delivered a handful of early Semi units to customers such as PepsiCo, Costco, Martin Brower, and Walmart.

Last week, two Semis arrived at Tesla's Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg, and the company has stated that it plans to produce the Semi in Germany in addition to the U.S. factory in Nevada in the future.
