CAMX Power LLC, headquartered in Lexington, Massachusetts, recently announced that Panasonic Energy has obtained a patent license to produce cathode active material for lithium-ion batteries using its latest technology platform, GEMX®.

The company states that the GEMX® platform has been developed based on CAMX's technological advancements and has acquired over 30 invention patents globally, including in the United States, the European Union, South Korea, Japan, and China. The GEMX technology, through molecular engineering, places cobalt and aluminum at the critical spots of cathode particles. This results in reduced cobalt usage while providing higher stability, enhanced performance, and reduced costs for all classes of nickel-based cathode materials, including high-manganese. Its derivative products are branded as gNMC®, gNMCA®, gNCA®, and gLNO®.

"Instead of attempting production ourselves, CAMX, through license agreements like these can have its inventions rapidly and more broadly come to market for the benefit of society,"  said Dr. Kenan E. Sahin, President and Founder of the company. He also noted that battery costs account for one-third of the electric vehicle costs, with about half of the cell cost being the cathode. He expressed that having Panasonic Energy choose the GEMX cathode material technology platform is a great honor for the company.

CAMX Power LLC, located near Boston, Massachusetts, focuses on developing materials for lithium-ion batteries. Its flagship product is the globally patented GEMX cathode platform, which reduces cobalt content to less than 5% and significantly improves battery performance for applications in electric vehicles and energy storage.

The company's business model involves deep technology transfer through patent licensing to large manufacturers. In addition to Panasonic Energy, companies such as EcoPro BM, Umicore, L&F, LG Energy Solutions, EV Metals, Samsung SDI, BASF, and Johnson Matthey have also been licensees of GEMX.

In terms of product development, CAMX operates a material synthesis facility, a pilot plant for scalability, and cell-making facilities. Its business and technology model aims to catalyze early-stage technologies, de-risk them, protect intellectual property, and help manufacturers achieve mass production or be production-ready.
