Recently, the China Energy News reported that the Qingdao Institute of Bioenergy and Process Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences has developed a new lithium sulfide cathode material for all-solid-state lithium-sulfur batteries, with an energy density exceeding 600 watt-hours per kilogram. This research provides new methods and ideas for the development of all-solid-state batteries with high energy density, which is more than double the energy density of currently commercialized lithium-ion batteries and is also more cost-effective. The relevant research results have been published in the international academic journal "Small".

It is reported this lithium sulfide cathode material demonstrates a high specific capacity of 1165.23 milliampere-hours per gram, close to the theoretical value of 1167 milliampere-hours per gram. After 6200 cycles at room temperature, its capacity can still maintain 84.4%. When assembled into a full battery with commercialized silicon-carbon anodes, after 400 cycles at room temperature, the specific capacity of the battery still remains above 97% of the initial capacity.

According to the introduction, the new material can effectively solve issues such as the "shuttle effect" in liquid lithium-sulfur batteries. In addition, the material has characteristics such as high energy density and long cycle life, and it has extremely high commercial value and broad application prospects in the electric vehicle industry.
