Solid-State Battery | BYD to Commercialize Small-Scale All Solid-State Batteries in 2027

It is reported that BYD has recently applied for an invention patent for “all-solid-state batteries, battery packs, and electrical equipment”on October 8 to the China National Intellectual Property Administration.

According to the application, the all-solid-state battery patent from BYD is featured with an  innovative design of the battery structure. The all-solid-state battery interleaves the negative electrode plate and the positive electrode plate, with a solid electrolyte layer placed between them. The outermost layer is the negative electrode plate, which includes a negative electrode collector and negative electrode active material layers and ceramic layers respectively set on both surfaces of the negative electrode collector. The ceramic layer is located on the surface of the negative electrode collector that faces away from the positive electrode plate.

The patent application information shows that designing the outermost layer of the battery as a ceramic layer, utilizing the ceramic layer’s good rigidity and hardness, ensures uniform force distribution when the battery is subjected to high pressure during the isostatic pressing process. This maintains a flat pressing surface, reducing the risk of the outer packaging film breaking, and maintaining flatness during subsequent constrained pressing processes, resulting in good initial efficiency and cycle performance of the battery.

BYD has recently revealed its progress in the field of all-solid-state batteries. At the 2024 World New Energy Vehicles Conference at the end of September, BYD stated that it has conducted in-depth research in the field of solid-state batteries, and the widespread application of solid-state batteries will still take 3-5 years. And the solid-state batteries will mainly be used in high-end models for a long period of time. BYD believes that lithium iron phosphate batteries will not be phased out by the market shortly, and it will remain the mainstream in the budget electric vehicle market due to its low cost and controllable materials for the next 15-20 years.

As early as June this year, a few local media sources revealed BYD has a clear plan for solid-state battery installation. BYD’s subsidiary, FinDreams Battery, will produce solid-state batteries in small batches in 2027, first equipped in BYD’s high-end models, with a planned scale of about 1000 vehicles. After nearly 3 years of pilot application, it is expected that 40,000 vehicles will be equipped with its all-solid-state batteries by 2030. By 2032, the annual sales volume of BYD’s electric vehicles equipped with all-solid-state batteries is expected to reach 120,000 units, with a corresponding market size of 25 billion yuan.

It is also reported that FinDreams may have chosen the technical route of nickel-rich nickle-manganese-cobalt cathode (single crystal) + silicon-based anode (low expansion) + sulfide electrolyte (composite halide), with a solid-state cell capacity of over 60Ah, a mass-specific energy density of 400Wh/kg, and a volume-specific energy density of 800Wh/L.

In addition to BYD, in recent months, companies such as Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, CATL, Samsung SDI, and Toyota have also successively revealed their progress and plans in the field of all-solid-state batteries. Overall, the consensus in the industry on the commercialization progress of all-solid-state batteries is “mass production in around 2027 and large-scale industrialization by 2030.”

At the World Power Battery Conference in early September, Rechard Zeng, chairman of CATL, said that CATL has been researching and developing all-solid-state batteries for 7-8 years and is currently at level 4 in the 1-9 stage of solid-state battery technology and manufacturing maturity. CATL is in an industry-leading position and expects to scale-produce all-solid-state batteries by 2027.

According to public media, CALB recently announced the "Wu Jie" (which means “Boundaryless”) all-solid-state battery, with an energy density of 430Wh/kg and a capacity of 50Ah, planning to install it in vehicles by 2027. Great Power released two all-solid-state pouch batteries with capacities of 20Ah and 2000mAh, with an energy density of 280Wh/kg, expecting to start pilot research and development and produce in small scale by 2025, and formally establish a production line and produce in bulk by 2026. Gotion High-Tech revealed that it has achieved the preparation and basic performance verification of vehicle-grade all-solid-state batteries.

Furthermore, in the field of battery materials, the lithium mining giant Tianqi Lithium announced that it has completed the industrial preparation of the next-generation solid-state battery key raw material lithium sulfide, and has conducted sample tests with more than ten downstream customers. BASF-Shanshan Battery Materials Company launched the cathode active material for all-solid-state batteries and recently completed pilot-scale production at its Changsha base. In addition, the Qingdao Institute of Bioenergy and Process Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences has developed a new type of lithium sulfide cathode material for all-solid-state lithium-sulfur batteries, with an energy density exceeding 600Wh/kg. Compared to the currently commercialized lithium-ion batteries, its energy density is more than double, and the cost is lower.

On September 11, Mercedes-Benz and the American startup battery company Factorial Energy announced that they will jointly develop a new type of solid-state battery named “Solstice.” This battery technology is expected to reduce the weight of the battery by 40% and increase the driving range of electric vehicles by 80%, with an expected cruising range of up to 1000 kilometers, aiming to achieve mass production by 2030. On July 11, Volkswagen Group’s battery company PowerCo and the American startup QuantumScape reached an agreement to jointly promote the industrialization of QuantumScape’s next-generation solid-state lithium metal battery technology.
