Recently, South Korean battery supplier LG Energy Solution (LGES) announced that it will supply 4695 large cylindrical batteries for the R2 model of Rivian, an American electric vehicle startup.
LGES stated that the two parties have signed a five-year agreement to supply a total of 67GWh of 4695 large cylindrical batteries from its Queen Creek battery factory in Arizona to Rivian's R2 model produced in the United States. The localized production of batteries is expected to make the R2 model eligible for a tax credit of up to $7,500 based on the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). However, LGES did not specify the start date for the supply. Nevertheless, the R2 is scheduled to hit the market in 2026.
The 4695 battery proposed for the R2 model has a diameter of 46 millimeters and a height of 95 millimeters, which is different from the 4680 battery that Tesla plans to use, but consistent with the battery size that BMW plans to adopt. Just last month, LGES signed a supply contract for 4680 batteries with Mercedes-Benz. Rivian's R1 series models use smaller 2170 or 18650 cylindrical batteries, the same as those used in Tesla's Model Y and Model 3.
LGES pointed out that this large cylindrical battery uses high-nickel cathode materials, providing higher energy density, improved spatial efficiency, and enhanced safety. The capacity of the 4695 cylindrical battery is "more than six times that of the existing 2170 cylindrical batteries." Rivian hopes that the packaging efficiency of this battery can be increased by 45%. It is reported that the 67 GWh of batteries Rivian will purchase under this agreement in the next five years can be used to produce about 700,000 R2 series models, with a battery capacity of about 100 kWh per vehicle.
The Rivian R2 model is priced at $45,000 and is a mass-market vehicle the company plans to produce. This model will initially be produced at the Normal factory in Illinois and is planned to be produced at a factory in Georgia in the future. Earlier this year, Rivian received a total of $827 million in funding from the state of Illinois to expand its existing factory in Normal. The Normal factory currently mainly produces models such as the R1T pickup, R1S SUV, and EDV commercial vans. The future Georgia factory will also produce the compact Rivian R3 and R3X models released earlier this year.
Rivian recently announced that in the third quarter of 2024, the company produced 13,157 electric vehicles and delivered 10,018, mentioning that the supply of Enduro motor unit components shared by its self-developed R1 models and van platforms hindered the smooth progress of vehicle production. The company estimates that the total delivery volume for 2024 is expected to reach between 50,500 and 52,000 units.
