Talent New Energy and Changan Automobile jointly released separator-free solid-state lithium battery technology on November 7, 2024. This separator-free solid-state lithium battery has significantly improved safety and has made greater breakthroughs in energy density, helping to alleviate consumers' range anxiety, reduce costs, and enhance the cost-performance ratio of new energy vehicles.
According to information released by Talent New Energy, its separator-free solid-state battery technology suppresses the formation and penetration of lithium dendrites through composite solid electrolyte layers and ISFD technology, achieving intrinsic safety. Compared to lithium-ion batteries based liquid electrolyte, the safety performance of Talent's separator-free semi-solid batteries will be greatly improved, far exceeding national standards in safety tests such as compression, high temperature, and overcharging. It can withstand a compression deformation of 60%, which is a 300% increase in compression resistance. It can be overcharged to 19V, with a 300% increase in overcharge resistance. Talent's separator-free semi-solid NCM and LFP/LMFP batteries can maintain no fire or explosion at 180°C and 200°C for 30 minutes, respectively, with heat resistance temperatures increased by 50°C and 70°C.
Currently, Talent's 25Ah separator-free semi-solid battery already has fast charging efficiency of 3C charging and 4C discharging. After 1032 cycles at 25°C, it still retains 87% of its capacity, and after 1096 cycles at 45°C, it still retains 83% of its capacity.
In addition, the separator-free solid-state battery technology is compatible with various material systems such as NCM, LFP, and LMFP, allowing for flexible customization of batteries with different energy densities. In terms of cost control, the separator-free technology reduces dependence on traditional separator materials and some electrolytes, reducing the raw material cost by more than 10%.
During the technology release, Dr. Gao Xiang, Chairman & CTO of Talent New Energy, also detailed Talent's pioneering revolutionary "material reduction manufacturing" concept for lithium batteries. Its “4-3-2-1” technology roadmap will subtract from the use of battery materials, gradually reducing the use of the four main materials in batteries: the first step, eliminating the separator and part of the electrolyte, for the semi-solid batteries that will be mass-produced and installed first; the second step, eliminating all electrolyte, for all-solid products used in fields such as low-altitude economy; the third step, eliminating the anode, for future anode-free all-solid products, establishing an industrial path from liquid to semi-solid and all-solid batteries.
Mr. Li Yan, CEO of Talent New Energy, said, "The separator-free solid-state lithium battery technology co-developed with Changan Automobile is a revolutionary innovation in the history of batteries. This not only provides excellent power solutions for Changan's new energy products but also injects new vitality into the new energy vehicle industry with broad application scenarios."
Du Changhong, head of Changan Automobile's Advanced Battery Research Institute, mentioned, "The world regards solid-state batteries as the next competitive high ground. Changan and Talent have jointly tackled many core technologies, and the separator-free solid-state battery technology is an important outcome, with four major advantages: high safety, high energy density, controllable costs, and scalable mass production. It is one of the key technologies of the ‘Golden Bell Jar’ battery and will become a new fulcrum for Changan Automobile's development. Changan Automobile will promote battery technology applications according to strategic planning."
Talent's separator-free semi-solid battery is planned to achieve vehicle verification in 2026 and mass production in 2027.
