A recent annual consumer survey on electric vehicles (EVs) by the American Automobile Association (AAA) shows a decline in consumer interest in purchasing electric vehicles. Only 18% of American adults say they are "very likely" or "likely" to buy a new or used all-electric vehicle, down from 23% last year. 63% stated they are "not very likely or not at all likely" to purchase an electric vehicle for their next car purchase.

In the US market, early adopters of electric vehicles have already owned one. Potential consumers who have not yet adopted electric vehicles focus on the practicality, cost, convenience, and ownership experience of electric vehicles, which are the barriers to their transition to all-electric cars.

Similar to previous institutional research findings, the AAA study found that cost, charging convenience, and range anxiety remain the three major obstacles to the widespread adoption of electric vehicles in the US market. One-third of respondents said they could not install a charging station where they live.

Charging convenience is a major consideration. For people living in apartments, it may not be possible to charge at home. For families with two or more cars, an electric vehicle may be a good choice. For American consumers who heavily rely on cars for daily travel and trips, electric vehicles may not be a good option.

Due to bottlenecks in the cost, charging convenience, and driving range of electric vehicles in the US market, there may be an upper limit to the number of consumers adopting pure electric vehicles in the near term. However, hybrid cars are bridging this gap. Consumer interest is shifting towards hybrid vehicles.

The AAA survey also confirms this. One-third of American adults (31%) say they are "very likely" or "likely" to purchase a hybrid car. Using a hybrid car can alleviate consumers' range anxiety, allow people to enjoy the benefits of electrification, and not disrupt their daily travel lifestyle or travel plans.

For many consumers, the abrupt transition to pure electric vehicles may feel overwhelming, while hybrid cars are an effective transition. Therefore, the institution predicts that, based on consumer demand, the US market may see a tripartite division of electric vehicles, hybrid cars, and internal combustion engine cars in the coming decades.

This survey is based on a sampling of the overall US household population, conducted from April 4 to 8, 2024. The research group has a sample coverage rate of about 97% of the US household population, with a total of 1,152 interviews completed among US adults aged 18 or above. Most surveys were conducted online or by telephone.
